What is messaging?
Messaging is how Community OS sends notifications to one person or broadcasts to a whole group, while respecting each person's choices.
What is it?
Messaging is how the community sends and receives messages. It has three kinds of records:
- A notification, which is a message to one person. It shows whether the person has read it or archived it.
- A broadcast, which is a message sent to a group of people who share interests or regions.
- A subscription, which records a person's chosen interests and channels.
The subscription matters. Messages are sent based on what each person chose, so people receive what is useful to them.
When do you use it?
You use messaging when you need to reach people with information. You use it to:
- Tell one person something personal, like a confirmed place at an event.
- Tell the whole community something, like a changed date or an urgent update.
- Reach only the people who are interested, using their subscriptions.
- Let people control how much they receive.
Example
An event is cancelled at short notice. James, the coordinator, sends a broadcast to everyone who subscribed to that event's interest and region. Wiremu receives the notification and reads it on his phone. He does not arrive at an empty hall. Wiremu's subscription means he only gets messages about the interests he chose, so he is not overwhelmed.
