Resign as a trustee

How a trustee ends their role by revoking the delegation.

As a trustee you act for a beneficiary within set limits. You are not forced to keep the role. You can resign at any time. Resigning means ending your delegation. After you resign, the delegation is revoked and you lose access to the beneficiary's records.

Purpose

This guide helps a trustee end their role. After following it, your delegation is revoked and your access to the beneficiary's records stops.

Who this is for

This guide is for a trustee who wants to stop acting for a beneficiary.

What you need

  • Your Community OS identity. Read the guide to create your identity first if you do not have one.
  • Sign in to Community OS.
  • A way to tell the beneficiary you are resigning.

What you will do

  1. Open your roles.
  2. Choose the delegation to end.
  3. Resign.
  4. Confirm.
  5. Tell the beneficiary.

Instructions

  1. Sign in to Community OS.
  2. Open My roles.

You see the delegations that name you as a delegate.

  1. Choose the delegation you want to end.
  2. Select Resign.
  3. Enter a reason if you want to record one. This step is optional.
  4. Select Confirm.

The delegation is now revoked. Status: Revoked.

  1. Check the status reads Revoked for that delegation.
  2. Tell the beneficiary you have resigned. This is a courtesy. The beneficiary does not need to do anything to make the resignation work.

What happens next

  • Your delegation is revoked. You can no longer act for the beneficiary.
  • Your access stops immediately. You cannot open the records you had access to.
  • The beneficiary's consent to you is still on their side. You cannot revoke it. The beneficiary can revoke it, or leave it, as they choose.
  • The beneficiary can name a new trustee, or ask you to take the role again later.

Troubleshooting

  • Problem: you changed your mind after resigning. Fix: ask the beneficiary to create a new delegation naming you again. Your new role starts from the new delegation's start date.
  • Problem: you can still see the beneficiary's records. Fix: check the status reads Revoked. If it does, the view may be a saved page. Sign out and sign in again.
  • Problem: you want to resign on a future date. Fix: keep the delegation for now, and set its end date to the date you want to stop.
  • Problem: you resigned but the beneficiary did not notice. Fix: tell the beneficiary directly. The delegation status will show Revoked.
